BETZ BALL
EDC SPINNER

A compact spinner inspired by the Betz Ball story, shaped around a rounded center and two opposing wings.

●  ORIGIN

The design article recounts a forest fire near Jacksonville, Florida, in March 1974. After the fire, local resident Terry Matthew Betz found a bright metallic sphere in the burned remains, and the object became known as the Betz Ball.

Its unusual appearance and behavior prompted speculation about extraterrestrial origins. The source article says it was ultimately understood to be an earthly object, while some UFO enthusiasts continued to view it as an alien artifact. The story remains part urban legend, part unsolved mystery shaped by circumstance and public imagination.

For the design, whether the object existed is secondary to what it represents: hope, curiosity and a brief step away from ordinary reality. That idea informs the spinner's intentionally unusual shape, beyond a conventional flat profile.

●  TWIN-RIDGE PROFILE

The side retains the Betz Ball's twin-ridge lines, a key HAND POIS spinner design feature. The ridges organize the play of light and shadow and draw the flowing curves together.

●  CELESTIAL MOTION

The design's most striking state is in motion. The central sphere stays fixed on the axis while the wings blur with speed. The effect is not about spinning as fast as possible; in motion, the Betz Ball takes on the appearance of a tiny celestial body.

The Betz Ball's split bearing-linked interlock components

●  GRAVITY-LINKED INTERLOCK

This interlock uses a split construction joined by a bearing. Friction allows the inner and outer parts to move together and produce sound. Changing the spinner's tilt angle changes the linked movement.

●  PERFORATED INTERLOCK

A lighter perforated design balances the overall mass distribution and includes a through-hole for cord carry.
