Description

Introduction to Pixiu in Chinese culture:

1. Basic Concept
Pixiu is a mythical auspicious beast in Chinese legend, ranked among the Five Sacred Creatures alongside the dragon, phoenix, turtle, and qilin. Its hybrid form combines symbolic features:

  • Dragon head: Wisdom and authority
  • Lion body: Strength and power
  • Deer ears: Prosperity blessings
  • Phoenix tail: Divine protection
  • Wings: Spiritual transcendence

Its most distinctive trait is having a mouth but no anus, symbolizing its ability to accumulate and safeguard wealth indefinitely.

2. Core Symbolism

  • Wealth Guardian: Believed to "devour fortunes from all directions without leakage." Business magnate Li Ka-shing famously used Pixiu sculptures to resolve feng shui issues in his properties.
  • Evil Warder: Since the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD), Pixiu motifs have adorned jade artifacts and military banners for protection. Feng shui masters utilize it to balance energy flows.
  • Military Might: Ancient armies were called "Pixiu Troops" for their combat prowess.

3. Cultural Legends

  • Celestial Punishment: The Jade Emperor sealed Pixiu's anus as punishment for greed, forcing it to perpetually hoard treasures.
  • Imperial Connections: Emperor Gaozu of Han used Pixiu to guard national treasures, while Emperor Qianlong collected antique Pixiu jades and commissioned replicas.
  • Evolution: From winged quadrupeds in Han Dynasty art to 26 modern variations like career-advancing "Double-Winged Pixiu" and family-oriented "Mother-Child Pixiu."
